Why is the conference being rescheduled? When and where will it be held?

We appreciate the concern that some people have expressed regarding the security situation in Israel and how it will affect the safety of participants in the 5th European Conference on Computational Biology (ECCB '06). In order to host a high-quality conference that people will feel comfortable attending, we are delaying the conference to January 21-24, 2007. The location will remain the same: the Dan Eilat hotel in the Red Sea resort town of Eilat, Israel
.

How will this affect the scientific content of the conference?

The conference schedule will remain unchanged to the greatest extent possible. We are in the process of contacting all the speakers to verify that they will be able to participate on the new dates. Any changes will be reflected in the Program and Schedule sections of this website.

What about new results--will the conference still be timely?

The conference presentations are still cutting edge, and the oral presentations will be published in a special issue of the journal Bioinformatics. In addition, we are planning an additional session for presenting late-breaking results; we will send an announcement once the details have been worked out.

When will the proceedings be published?

The special issue of the journal Bioinformatics that contains the proceedings will be delayed; it will be published shortly before the conference.

I signed up to attend on the original dates, and now I will come in January. How will this affect the cost of my attending the conference?

We realize that some people have already made travel plans, and in particular may have to pay penalties to reschedule their airline tickets. Airfare and hotels prices are less expensive in January than in September, which should help offset the change fee. Detailed prices are posted on the website. Overall, the change in dates should have at most a small effect on the cost of participation.

If you purchased a non-refundable, non-exchangeable ticket, you may still be able to apply to the airline to rescind the fee for changing the ticket. Click here to download a letter from the conference that explains the circumstances and which may help in contacting the airline. If you encounter difficulties, please contact the Conference Secretariat, and include the passenger names and the PNR numbers (reservation numbers).

I signed up to attend on the original dates. Do I need to re-register?

If you would like to maintain your registration as it was, including staying in hotels on the same nights of the week as previously, then please fill out only the Domestic flights to/from Eilat section of the registration form and resubmit it. If you want to make additional changes besides the flights, please resubmit the entire registration form. In either case, please mark the box at the top of the form that says that this is a resubmission. We apologize for this inconvenience.

I signed up to attend on the original dates, but I signed up past the deadline. Can I still get an early-registration discount?

Anybody who registered at the regular registration rate before the date change will be charged only the early-registration fee.

I did not sign up on the original dates. Can I still get an early-registration discount?

The early-registration deadline has been extended to Tuesday, November 21, 2006.

I signed up to attend on the original dates, and I can't come in January. Will I be charged a penalty for cancelling my registration?

The new dates will, unfortunately, be inconvenient for some people who planned to participate in September. Cancellations received by August 31, 2006, will be processed without a cancellation fee. Thereafter, the standard policy will apply; cancellations until three weeks before the start of the conference will be charged a $30 processing fee.

I signed up to attend on the original dates and I purchased a non-refundable ticket, but I can't come in January. Can you help me pay for the ticket?

Regrettably, the conference cannot reimburse you for non-refundable or non-exchangeable tickets. This is a force majeure kind of occurrence, and the conference does not have the resources to cover the costs of this unfortunate situation. Many of us save money by purchasing non-refundable or non-exchangeable tickets, but we always run the risk when we do so that we will be unable to use them. If you have purchased travel insurance, the insurance may cover some or all of your costs. Click here to download a letter from the conference that explains the circumstances and which may help in contacting the airline or insurance company.

I received a fellowship for the original dates. Will it still apply for the rescheduled dates?

Yes, the fellowships are applicable to the new conference dates.

I received a fellowship for the original dates but I cannot come on the rescheduled dates. What should I do?

Please let us know as soon as possible so that we can award the fellowship funding to another candidate.

Is Eilat safe? Can I get there safely? What about safety on the post-conference tours?

Eilat is safe, both in terms of street crime and terrorist activity. Travel from Ben Gurion International Airport to Eilat is also safe and has been continuing without interruption. The post-conference tours go only to safe areas.

What is the weather like in Eilat during January?

The weather in Eilat is very pleasant in January, averaging 22C (72F). Always pleasant as a Red Sea resort, Eilat is especially attractive during the northern-hemisphere winter months.
